Organisation profile: BS-Rotor provides high quality NDT equipment for non-destructive evaluation market. They supply equipment and services for all NDT methods and applications with particular emphasis on offshore inspection repair and maintenance companies. They have many years’ experience in inspection equipment and repair equipment of wind turbines, especially of rotor blades. They have provided inspection and repair equipment for more than 3000 WT. Currently their range of equipment is only available for inspection work performed by technicians via rope access or with a working platform depending on the requirements. Inspections can also be performed with NDT (ultrasonic or thermography technology), to inspect the blade shell bulkhead/web connection and to find lamination faults which are not visible.
Role in the project: Exploitation Manager/Liaison with project SMEs. Responsible for input into most WPs but particularly WP1 for specifications input, WP3 assisting with the implementation of the NDT transducer-wheel system and probe configuration, WP5 for validating project results, and WP6 for project dissemination and exploitation.
Reasons for participating: BS-Rotor will extend their portfolio of NDT related products, currently comprised of ultrasonic and thermographic equipment, with a novel Acousto-ultrasonic NDE technique for fast inspection of 3D structures with complex geometry and big size such as wind turbine blades. Additionally it will enable them to offer high-quality inspection services to the wind industry with an automated system, thus eliminating the need for inspectors to climb on WT blades using ropes or in a basket suspended from a crane. Most importantly the proposed system will produce a map with mechanical property variations of the blade and estimate its remaining lifespan providing significant reduction in unscheduled downtime.
